National Therapeutic Recreation Week

July 8-14, 2018

Every year, the second week of July marks National Therapeutic Recreation Week. Established in 1984, to spread public awareness on the importance of therapeutic recreation processed and programs. Therapeutic recreation, also known as recreational therapy, was created to help people learn how to integrate leisure activities into their lives, which may boost over health, functional abilities, self-reliance, and overall quality of life.

According to the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification, “The purpose of recreational therapy is to improve or maintain physical, cognitive, social, emotional and spiritual functioning in order to facilitate full participation in life.”

When programs can add recreational therapy into programming, the clients benefit. Recreational Therapy can take on many forms, including art therapy, horticulture, aquatic therapy, music therapy, sports, dance, yoga, animal-assisted therapy, social outings into the community and more. Ultimately, these forms of therapy are designed to help reduce an individuals stress levels which directly affect a person’s overall mood and wellbeing. When an individual is less stressed and the neurotransmitters in the brain are moderated, a person’s risk of relapsing is decreased.

Recreational Therapy can be an extremely effective and important tool to the overall recovery success of an individual in a substance abuse treatment program. An addict’s life is usually consumed by their addiction pushing friends, family, hobbies and passions aside for their next high. Addicts often find themselves feeling lonely in an introverted lifestyle. Additionally, individuals who have struggled with substance abuse may find it difficult to engage in social activities without the presence of drugs or alcohol.

Since Fieldview at Holland is a holistic addiction treatment program, Recreational Therapy is fluent in a client’s experience here. In top of other evidence-based practices, Therapeutic Recreation allows participants to see an improvement in overall mood, motor skills, social skills and improved time management. Client’s at Fieldview at Holland have access to numerous Therapeutic Recreation activities such as daily yoga, outings to the YMCA, onsite horticulture projects, therapy animal visits, daily journaling activities and numerous arts and craft projects.
